Non-indigenous settlements in the Northern Territory are relatively few, and are mainly located along the Stuart Highway which runs through the centre of the Territory from top to bottom. The major towns along the route are Darwin, Katherine, Tennant Creek and Alice Springs. Throughout the Territory, however, there are many indigenous communities located both relatively close to regional centres and in quite remote locations. The majority of these indigenous communities are located on freehold aboriginal land and permission is required from the local Land Council to enter or visit them.
